What changed with the PMP application process on July 2026?
The PMP® application system changed in July 2026 with the release of the new PMP exam.
With the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini, many applicants have tried using AI to write their applications. A lot of these AI-written PMP applications are being rejected, either because they do not sound authentic to the human PMP application reviewers and auditors or because of AI content and plagiarism detection tools.

You don’t need to rely on AI slop (even if it does sound kinda PMBOK-ish), outdated advice, or templates from people who don’t understand the real reasons why some applications are quickly approved and others are rejected or held up in ongoing audits.
What were the major changes to the PMP online application forms in July 2026?
Here is our analysis of what has changed with the PMP Application in July 2026:
- increased use of tools and training to detect AI-generated or plagiarized content in PMP applications appears to be leading to additional rejected applications. This is good news if you can write professionally about your project management experience using PMBOK terminology, but bad news if you hoped to just have an AI make it sound like you know what you talking about.
- you don’t have to report things like project budget, team size, or the functional area you worked in. Which is great because these things have nothing to do with whether you meet the project experience requirements.
- you do not explicitly need to provide details for each project separately; instead you describe each “project experience” you had for a specific combination of organization and job title. This improves flexibility in some situations but can be tricky to meet the PMP reviewers objections if they get confused about the nature of your experience. Many applications are rejected because they seem to contain what PMI considers some non-qualifying operations (rather than project) experience. This “project vs operations” issue is something we help applicants avoid.
- you can now include experience from the past 10 years instead of only 8 years. Good news!
- the application form explicitly states “All experience must be leading projects, not just participating in them.” PMI.org further defines leading projects as “taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes”. PMI does not state that you needed to have been the sole official project manager but your application must be very carefully written so that it is clear that you were leading the project activities rather than just being a contributor.
What stayed the same with the PMP application?
Based on our research and testing so far, what hasn’t changed is:
- Apart from your “job title”, the project description field is still the most important item that the PMI reviewers use to decide if your experience looks like it meets their criteria and expectations. PMI will continue to send rejection emails if they decide your application does not qualify for whatever reason (most commonly replying that some of it sounds like “operations” rather than a qualifying “project”).
- you won’t have to include contact details, addresses, phone numbers, or emails in the initial application. If you are audited, PMI will ask for this information, so you should still prepare them to be contacted by PMI and make sure they agree with your application.
- The audit process changed in May 2022 to be fully online using e-signatures instead of by mail. A normal audit involves uploading your education documents to my.pmi.org and having that system send a copy your project details for each project on your PMP application to someone who can verify the accuracy of your project description and details.
